Film Openings - The Wrong Turn

Today watched the film opening of “Wrong turn” and analysed it. I think doing this will help us with our main task of creating a film opening of a teen horror. While analysing this film opening we realised that it contained of the common horror film convention such as the fake scare. This happens when the women almost falls down the cliff, this was shortly followed by a real scare where the male character has been killed and she then begins to be pulled up by an unknown threat in an aggressive manor. The music at this point then became faster as the “baddies” presence became acknowledged by the viewer. The opening ended with the unimportant characters being killed, this happens in most horror movies as a prologue.
Wrong turn is rated 6.0 on the imbd website.

Wrong Turn is a 2003 American slasher film, directed by Rob Schmidt, and written by Alan B. McElroy. The film was shot in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and stars Desmond Harrington and Eliza Dushku. It is the first film in the Wrong Turn franchise which has since grown to include three direct-to-DVD/Blu-ray sequels.

preliminary task

Today we started to create our storyboard for the preliminary task. We then took pictures of 2 locations that could potentially be used as filming locations for our preliminary task. Then we made our cast list and photo graphed them. our cast is me and Joe.

We were also given our target grades mine is a C.
below are pictures the cast and location:
This first picture is of the location we chose to film our preliminary task this is because it has the right amount of space and lighting and also there are chairs and desks available.

This  picture is panoramic shot of the location we didn't as much. We didn't like this as much because the large size and that it would give an echo:
The next two pictures are of our cast consisting of me and my group member Joe:

Preliminary Script

In today's lesson our group (Joe Jordan me( started to put our rough ideas together to make a final piece. After some discussion and planning we made a rough copy for our preliminary script. We then tweaked this and finalised it to make our final script for our preliminary task. Our final script includes our location, characters and dialogue.

media studies

Today in media me and Ryan were used as example to show the class a short dialog as an example for what the preliminary task. We also began to discus in our groups (me Jordan and Joe) on the script to be used for our preliminary task. We also watched others preliminary tasks to give us ideas for our own.

3 P's

In to today's lesson we were taught 3 steps in how to create a piece of media

Planning - Pre production,
Filming - Production,
Editing - Post production.

Planning
Pre production
What is pre production?
Pre-production is the planning stage of your shoot. This happens before the camera starts rolling. By creating storyboards, scouting locations, and figuring out the budget ahead of time, your production will be free of unnecessary worry and problems.
During pre-production, the script is broken down into individual scenes and all the locations, props, cast members, costumes, special effects and visual effects are identified. Basically everything it ready for filming such as the set is ready, the crew is ready and finances is sorted.

Filming
What is production?
Production is when you’re filming/recording, this is when actors are on set and the cameras are rolling.

Editing
what is post production?
Post production is where the final step in the making of a film or television programme - a process of you finalise raw materials into a finished product before distribution and release to the public/
Editing is a key function - of picture, sound, effects, or a combination of these, but there are other areas - telecine, sound, creating *DVD's and special effects to name a few.

After this we were also taught the 180 degree rule and the reverse shot.

The 180 Degree Rule is were two characters in a scene should always have the same left/right relationship to each other. If you don't follow the 180 Degree Rule, or break it intentionally, it disrupts the scene. When you break the 180 line, a person who was originally facing left in a scene is all of the sudden facing right. This video below explains the 180 degree rule better.

The 180 Degree Rule states that two characters in a scene should always have the same left/right relationship to each other. If you don't follow the 180 Degree Rule, or break it intentionally, it disrupts the scene disorients the audience. When you break the 180 line, a person who was originally facing left in a scene is all of the sudden facing right. Wait! When did they switch places?

Ideas for the Preliminary Task

Today our group started to think of some ideas for our preliminary task. These ideas consisted of cast, location, camera angles and shots, script and music. Overall we decided to make our preliminary task video short and sweet so that it is simple. We also decided that we were going to use a song by Labrinth which can be listened to below.

Getting Started

In my first lesson of media studies we were told to get into groups of 2/3 (my group is Jordan and Joe) and start to plan a scene where someone enters a room, walks along and sits opposite another person. They then have to have a small conversation consisting of a few lines each. We also needed to set a blogger account and then a slideshare account. The slideshare account helps me because it transfers power points onto my blog. I have setup both my blogger and slideshare accounts and I’m looking forward to my lesson.
