Finished

Below is our completed piece, after the long period of planning, filming and editing, we have finally come to the stage where we feel that we have finished. The process was was very long and enjoyable and we all learnt a number of new skills along the way. I feel that we have achieved success in the creation of " Breaking The Fourth Wall"

Looking back at your preliminary task (the continuity edit task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

The slideshow below consists of a number of comparisons between shots that were taken during the creation of our groups preliminary task and shots that were taken during the main horror opening scene task. We have analysed a number of different shots, techniques and camera skills that were used for different shots and also gone into detail as to what we feel is the good and the bad points of each shots. We have picked out the poor shots from the continuity edit and shown how we have improved these types of shots in the main task.

Evaluation 5

You've just watched the opening scene of my horror film, can I have your reaction and thoughts? Would you be interested in watching more, if so, why? What film that you've seen, would you compare Breaking The 4th Wall too? What is your favourite genre of film usually? What genre do you believe this film opening to fall under? Do any shots or shot angles stand out in your mind from your first viewing of the production? Do you feel the titles and the score suited the type of production we created? What effect do you think this had on the overall production? Any finally comments on what you enjoyed from our production and what you felt could be improved? Thank you for your time, and thank you for watching guys.

Evaluation 6

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this production?

Below I have produced a powerpoint presentation using Microsoft Powerpoint Presentation. This slideshare version ofthe powerpoint includes the different type of software, equipment and technologies that we as a group have used during our time creating this production.

What Kind Of Media Institution Might Distribute Your Media Product And Why?
Having spent a good amount of time surfing the internet, comparing a wide range of potential institution's that we feel would be interested in distributing our small media production we have come to a conclusion. We decided that a company such as Maxim Media would be very interested in our type of production as they pride themselves on 'distributing a large range of independent horror and shock films to a potentially worldwide audience'.

The fact that they specialize in distributing only independent films played a key role for us in making our decision to select Maxim Media as a preffered institution to distribute our film. What this means is instead of distributing large, big budget blockbusters such as The Hills Have Eyes or Saw for example, they will specialize on low budget films that our without any real backing in the media aspects, advertisement or even financial backing. This is perfect for us as our media production was an extremely minimal budget piece of media that was without any backing of any sort from anyone! This means that Maxim Media are the type of company we would approach if we wished to find distribution from a company, we would choose them for that reason alone.

However that isn't the only reason we may have for selecting Maxim Media, the fact that they also specialize in a wide range of horror AND SHOCK films is another key point that should not be ignored. In terms of horror, our film doesn't really include a wide range of blood, guts and gore, however, it is more of an investigative shock/horror, in the fact it keeps the audience guessing and trying to figure out what might happen next. Because of this I believe that a institution that specializes in a wide range of horror movies will be better suited to a production such as ours because we have tried to become innovative with our ideas and our production, we have tried to create something that is new and fresh. It's for this reason why we believe Maxim Media would once more be suited to our production of, Breaking The Fourth Wall.

Who Would Be The Audience For Your Media Product?

(Left) Dean Houghton is 17 years old and is a student at Kettering Buccleuch Academy; he is a sixth form student who lives in the Northamptonshire area of the UK. He has a strong passion for media, film making and film consuming. He spends his spare time creating short films and researching into a future in the media/film making business. His love and knowledge of films is also shown in his place of work, the local Odeon cinema screening company. Dean is your average, young, outgoing and athletic teenage boy who enjoys nothing more than spending time with friends.

Dean, as mentioned enjoys spending time consuming media aswell as creating it. His favourite television show is The Walking Dead. The Walking Dead is a horror-drama which includes a Zombie Apocalypse in the US. The show is much americanised and is aired by an American TV channel. He likes this show because he says “As a TV show I find it really gripping, I really enjoy the drama element of the show aswell as the horror of the show. I find that these two aspects work very well because I believe it’s like watching your average drama, but you’re constantly on edge as to what might happen next because you’re aware of the horror element it has to offer through the means of Zombies, blood, guts and gore. For me, it’s the perfect mix and it has me totally hooked!”

Dean went onto comment about his love of scary films aswell as TV shows, “ I’d have to say that horror is by a mile my favourite genre of films. I have a huge passion for all types of films, but horror films just have that extra edge, that buzz that other types of films just don’t bring. They have the ability to put you edge, aswell as grip you and get you thinking, for the full 2 hours. I just don’t think that other genres of films can compare to horror, they don’t get you fearing, sympathising, they don’t have you jumping out your skin at every twist and turn, and that’s why, for me they’re the best types of film.” He later explains, “In terms of my favourite film of a horror/Thriller genre, I’d have to say "Cabin in the woods" would probably have to be it. It has that extra twist to it that other horror’s don’t, I like how it challenges conventions rather than copies them. I love how it is a very smart film, it’s clear to everyone that the storyline has been thought out well and that’s why I love it.”

Dean enjoys all different types of music, but his favourite type is Acoustic. Dean has recently been to several different music gigs, including his favourite artist, Ed Sheeran, who performed at a HMV event in Nottingham earlier this year. Dean has been a keen admirer of Ed since even before his rise to fame in 2010. He is constantly listening to Ed on his iPod and is a keen follower of Ed on Twitter. However he does also enjoy listening to a wide range of music that include the likes of Gyptian, The Enemy and Green Day.

Our reasoning for believing that our media product would be well suited to someone such as Dean is because he shares a strong love for horror products, he has told us his passion for this type of films. He commented on how his favourite type of film is "Cabin in the woods" because it is a very intelligent film that has a very well thought out storyline, he believes that this type of film is very appealing to his type of audience. As we used V for Vendetta as an inspiration we feel that he is a perfect target audience for us to use seeing how V for Vendetta is a smart thriller. This is why we used him as a model for who we wished to target in our production. We also feel that this type of film is something that there is a strong market for and the type you could imagine seeing in a cinema, Dean’s love of cinema’s is shown in his job alone, and for this reason aswell as many others we believe that he fits the perfect bill for our target audience.

Evaluation 2

How Does Your Media Product Represent Particular Social Groups?

In our production, we decided to go for someone that is far from the biggest person we know, we decided to choose someone who was of a smaller build for a number of reasons. Firstly because we feel that using a small build of character will lure the audience into seeing this character as less of a threat, this is good because when the actual murder happens they will be in more of a shock and confused about how this has happened. We feel this will help to engage the audience and make them feel as if there’s more to this character than meets the eye. We also wanted them to feel that even despite the size of the illuminati, they are far superior to use and have the power over the normal person, this is important to setting the scene and the plot of the story.
In terms of how our product represents certain social groups, there is one main point to discuss. This is again that about the character, we decided to go for on outfit that was inspired mainly by the hit film, V for Vendetta. The mask is commonly associated with the illuminati and secret services/freemasonry, worldwide. We felt that by including this mask, that the audience could easily relate to this type of story plot, the illuminati and V for Vendetta, which automatically will strike fear into the audience.
The image at the top of the screen shows just how we were inspired by V for Vendetta, we wanted to achieve a look that would incorporate not only the mask of ‘V’ but the secrecy of him, we used Monks robes rather than the conventional full black, to achieve this look. I also believe that the picture of our character (right) shows him to look powerful and almighty, this is shown by the way his hands are risen and his body posture and positioning. The fact that we chose to keep our character covered and keep the level of secrecy will make the audience expect the worst of him and try and figure him out as character.
However our character does have differences to the social group he most represents, the key fact that our character doesn’t use any sort of conventional weapons and uses more of an improvisational weapon in order to create a more memorable and authentic effect on the audience is something that our production team took a great level of care and went into great detail in selecting. We also feel they share great differences in there build, ‘V’ is shown to be a great, tall, well-built character who could dominate any victim with his bare hands, whereas our character is smaller and looks to be less of a threat, which was the deception we wanted to lure our audience into.

Evaluation 1

In what ways does your media products use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (i.e of film openings)

In general, our horror film doesn’t really apply many of the main conventions found inside a horror film. We have chosen to go for more of a political horror rather than such horror forms as a thriller or action. Because of this it means that we have chosen not to include conventions such as the fake scare, the ignorance towards a threat or the stranded victim convention. However in order to create a real horror atmosphere and be able to let the audience identify the genre that this film will fall into we decided it would beneficial for us to include a convention that is most commonly found in Slasher Horror’s, this is a convention that includes a character being killed in the opening minutes of the film.

Our horror was thought up based of personal idea’s and thoughts that group shared, our original idea has been altered an awful lot in order to gain the best effect of the audience. Our actual location and the way we filmed out shots was inspired from a music video that we felt helped to build tension and focus a lot on one character, Lupe Fiasco – Show goes on. The main shot that we decided we thought could work well for our production that we spotted during this music video was the shot I have included in the video below, we felt if we could track the movement of our main character towards the stage it would help the audience focus on this character, become gripped to the character and then have him killed and taken away from them, something they wouldn’t expect. I have also included our version of this shot to show the effect we were going for.

Below I have constructed a 10 minute video that includes Jack analysing the 14 key shots that we picked out as a group, he has talked about the reasons why we decided to pick this shots. He has also discussed the ways in which we constructed the shots and to how we feel this has benefited our production and in what way we feel it has had an overall effect on the final product:

Evaluation - Planning

We have had a meeting to discuss how we spread the questions between the group during the evaluation stages, we wanted to spread it out evenly to make it fair and everyone had the same workload. To help us in the creation of our evaluations, we used Petes blog as a form of a template to guide us. We have learnt that the content must be media rich in order to please the examiners and achieve the higher mark bands.

Disk Printing

In today's lesson with Mr Cradock, we were shown how to get an image and set it on a template so that it could be printed onto disk. After looking through a few images that could be used as our cover we finally found one that Jordan created on Adobe After Effects, it read "Breaking The Fourth Wall". We decided to use the title because the quality of the printing wasn't the best so we didn't want to wreck the disk by using a large image. the rest of the disk has a black background with  all of the groups names and candidate numbers. After doing this we gave our final finished product to Mr Henton.

DVD Burning

Today in the media room Jordan and Joe spent some time in creating our DVD menu so that it was ready to be burnt on to disk the next day. While they were doing I was currently busy so i could give much input, however I believe that the choices that they made were the best ones to fit around our teen horror theme.
They imported our final projects onto the disc. To do this they used i-DVD. To finish off the DVD menu we needed a good soundtrack. Our soundtrack was produced by music composer from YouTube.

Finishing touches

We are currently going through the final stages of the editing process by touching uo and tweaking the footage. Jordan from our special effects team thought we had to replace a shot, due it's quality. The decision was made because it "degrades the quality" of the rest of the film opening.

Friday 20 April 2012

Colour correction

After editing process was near to completetion we reviewed the video and concluded some of the colours weren't as good as they should be. To correct this problem, we knew we had to do some colour correction.
By using Adobe After Effects magic bullet feature we enhanced the quality of the moving image to the point that we felt cormfotable with it.

                                                                       Before

Touching up on Final Cut

During the Media lesson today, Mr Craddock introduced us to a new feature called Colour Correction. Below are some tutorials and pictures of before and after, when using colour correction.

As you can see by the images, colour correction help to brings out the vibrant colours within a frame. Colour correction makes images look a lot better and clearer

New Title

The plan was to slightly change the titles for Breaking The Fourth Wall, however Jordan being the hard worker he is, produced this stunning title which I find much better.

Film opening progess

This post is just to inform our current position and situation. After this long period of creating our teen horror film we currently on track with current task and should be the deadline. The film opening is almost complete to a good standard therefore we have high hopes of getting a successful product. After this long period of edditing by Jordan and making drafts I feel we have made good progress as a group to get specific jobs done and stay organised.

Second edit changes

We showed the current footage to Mr Henton to see what recommendation and changes he would suggest to us. Mr Henton said that it was good, but  the assassination of JFK footage wasn't ours so we should start our opening with a detailed description of the clip.  He then went on to say because it was found footage and not out own, we could lose marks because of it.
As a group we took this into consideration, but we have decided to keep the clip and not change it to details. We did this be we think it could completely ruin the effect of the clip.
Another problem that we encountered was the time, Mr Henton said that our clip was too long and we needed to cut it down. To do this Jordan will also removing some clips and shortening others.

Sunday 18 March 2012

Second Edit

We are currently in the final stages of the editing processes. However we wouldn't be here without Jordan due to his hard work and commitment. We now have a much better edit of the almost finished opening to our production "Breaking the 4th Wall". From this as a group we can decided what we to change and add to make it better. During discussion Joe made a very good change that could benefit us because it would save a lot of time.
" I personally think have the titles overlaying the assassination of the president to save time as we're 46 seconds over the allowed time before we'll start losing marks."  I totally agree with what Joe has proposed because it will shorten the time so that we don't lose marks.

Friday 9 March 2012

Rough footage

Today during media we showed Mr Cradock our rough footage that has been put together. He was impressed with this and told us what parts were good and what parts could be improved to make it even better.

Sunday 4 March 2012

Obama footage / Change of Plan

We have slightly changed some aspects of how our teen horror opening will start. We have now decided to show the assassination of JFK instead of the Obama clip because it firstly hard to obtain and the JFK assassination fits in better with our Illuminati effect.

Monday 27 February 2012

First edit

The clip below is a rough clip that Jordan created shortly after a second filming session. small rough clips like this help up to track our progress and see where we are currently at. We looked at this at the current footage and thought that it was really good, with this in mind we had high expectation for our final product.
From this Jordan started adding transitions and titles throughout the video, as well as using the score we plan to use.

Decision

As a group we have to decide if we want to film again as we don't have many shots and some aren't as good. With what we currently have i personally feel that the footage we have and the rough footage we have put together looks quite good but we will have to review this as a group and come to a decision.

We then  decided to go back to the Lighthouse Theater in
order to capture more shots. However the lack of communication from the Lighthouse Theatre has made impossible. The Lighthouse Theatre took so long to reply, that we then decided we had to carry on without going back.

Saturday 4 February 2012

Production Day 3

Today we did our second day of filming at The Lighthouse Theatre but not all of the footage we required was filmed within the small time frame of 2 hours. Getting more footage didn't seem very likely because of the time we had left to edit. The current footage that we have looks good and better than expected, so it wouldn't be the biggest downfall if we were not able to film again.

First school edit

We have imported our footage at school to enable us to edit. Now have some of our footage on the desktops we can begin the editing process. Although it's not all of our footage, we will edit these pieces to see how everything flows so far. We also decided to keep all our footage on the Macs and not fully edit until we have it all.

Editing of filming '#1

Today at school we looked over the footage as a group and picked out all the errors that were made.
After analysing the footage we started to talk about different shots and changes we could make to the the footage. We then came up with a new shot list and made a few changes to the storyline.

Production - Day 2

Today is the day! We were going to the Lighthouse theatre to film our final product! Me Joe and Jordan finished our school day early to enable us to gather the equipment, props and actors that would aid us in filming. The props and equipment were prepared the night before to make things easier for us. After leaving school we collected our bags and then our main actor Bruno and walked to the Lighthouse theatre.
Below is a picture of the bag with some of the equipment and then me and Joe holding the back on the way to the theatre.

After arriving at the theatre we took got stuck n straight away and started filming however we encountered some difficulties the first few shots in the backstage changing room due to the amount of mirrors. this meant we had to be careful of where we and the camera were positioned so that you couldn't see us in the background or in a reflection. Our 2 hours went well and successful when filming and gathering all the footage until the next day when we realised we had a few errors and things that didn't add up.

Take 2!

Yesterday we started our production stage of Break The 4th Wall by filming at the Lighthouse Theatre.
Today we are going back to continue with the production stages as we will have a lot to do. When reaching the theatre  Jack guided us through the pre-prepared shot list and we each went about how we wanted to do the shots and what shots we wanted, with some extra shots included from improvisation in case we thought it was a worthy addition.
We had from 4-6pm at the Lighthouse Theatre. We quickly got stuck in and started filming, however we lost track of time and didn't finish everything that was intended to be film.
Below is am image of me all wrapped up and ready to walk to the lighthouse theatre with the group. The second image is of Bruno on stage.

Monday 30 January 2012

Filming Confirmed

We have got confirmation that we can begin filming tomorrow at the Lighthouse Theatre. We are very excited about this and ready to go.

Sunday 29 January 2012

Camera accessories

Today while I was at work in the camera section I came across a range of different camera accessories as shown below.
FUJIFILM P10NA00290 SMALL TRIPOD

The Joby Gorillapod firmly secures your camera to just about anything, anywhere and everywhere! Unlike traditional tripods, Gorillapods do not require a level or elevated surface for you to take the perfect shot.

Progression meeting

Today our group had a meeting with Mr Henton to check our progressions and makesure that we are on the right route to success. After talking to  Mr Henton we ensured that we took his advice to keep our blog up to date and stay on top of things.

Filming

After much hassle and exchange of words, Jack has finally finalised the date to which we can have the lighthouse theatre for 2 hours. Its has been agreed for Wednesday the 1st of February so that we can film our horror opening.

More Opening titles practice

obtaining costumes

Due to changing certain scenes in our opening it's only right to rethink what costumes are going to be worn so that the mise en scene. However after some discussion and thought we decided to keep the costumes the same as before as it will give a good feel of characters role and importance.

The first costume that we looked at was for the main character. (Bruno) Bruno got the part because he fitted our candidate specification of being roughing and having the right look. The main character has the lead role and is the most important character because he is going to unveil illuinati so we decided that this character wears a suit.

These are some picture of our group and other possible candidate to play the main role in suits because our first choice cast is no longer available. Now we come on to the second character who will be wearing some form of a monks robs with the illuminati mask.
We recently ordered the robe on line and this should be delivered shortly. The robe we ordered is shown below however below that is a few others that we looked into before settling on this one.

This the robe we have ordered and below are others we looked at before making the choice of ordering this one.
