Soundtrack

One of the main parts of a filming opening is the audio, in our case this would be a soundtrack. As a group we decided that we wanted to have some form of music playing over the top throughout the opening.
The only problem now was the copyright issue. This means we couldn't use copyrighted material therefore making it harder for us to obtain.
However every cloud has a silver lining and  Jordan using to many skills managed to find us a composer. The composer was willing to create us soundtrack. Jordan found the composer through YouTube.

Creating and research of titles

Over the last couple of weeks in media with Mr Craddock we have been getting familiar with a bit of software called LiveType. LiveType is an expansion of Final cut which allows you to create titles. After having lots of time playing LiveType and creating titles, we thought it looked to much like amateurs work and the whole class had similar products. With this in mind we decided not to use LiveType but to use another program called Adobe After Affects.

Shot list for Breaking the 4th wall

This is the shot list I devised to help our group during the filming stage of our main task.
I think that preparing before shooting by creating a shot list will aid us massively as it will save us time and we know specifically what we need to record.
The Shot list is broken down into 4 columns.
The first column is basic as it only has the shot number, the second column has the scene number, the third column is the shot we want and lastly is the shot description which is pretty much the title a description of what we intend to record in this shot.

2nd Character casting season

After having our first discussion for casting and coming up with characteristic specification we are ready to proceed to the next stage. The stage would be getting potential candidates for this role. So we had a group discussion and through of all our possible candidates and then said what ability and skill each candidate had. After this long thought process we finally got to a conclusion which 2 candidates suited the position well we all concurred on.

Here is the first Canadian Jordan who will pose in an Illuminati mask.
The reasons for choosing Jordan were simple.

Firstly Jordan is a very reliable person and we all know him so that getting hold of him would be easy and we know that he is flexible. Also he knows everything about the role because he helped produce the whole "Breaking The 4th Wall" idea. We also know that Jordan did GCSE Drama where he achieved a Grade B so acting is an easy thing for Jordan making him a very good candidate

Untitled from Jack White on Vimeo.

Followed by the second candidate Joe
During the discussion of who we should cast Joe sprang to mind as he is part of the group and knows the idea and story inside out. By knowing this he know what is expected and what he should act like. I also think that Joe has the acting ability as he achieved a B grade at GSCE just like our other candidate Jordan. Joe just like Jordan is ready to work, reliable and flexible to when we need him
.

Character Casting discussion ( Main Role )

Today during our free lesson me, Jack and Jordan started to plan the casting for our main task. Although our fellow group member Joseph was absent we proceeded with what needed to be done.We wanted to get a better idea of what sort of people would be the ideal sort of candidate for our casting. So we started with the casting for the main role of our main task. The characters role is to unveil the secret behind Illuminati. To help us with the casting we started to product a brainstorm as per usual.

This is a picture of be preparing the brainstorm/discussion of the main character casting discussion.
I wanted to take charge of this discussion so that Jack wasn't always leading the group.
This is picture of our ideal main character.. By looking at this picture you can see all the ideal attributes that we want our main character to have because it will make them be the ideal character that we are all picturing.
This is a picture of me and Jordan Reading the script which was written by Jack. I recorded the media on my application with an application called "voice memos" then I emailed this to the Jack, Jack then eddied the media clip and uploaded it through Sound Cloud.

Candidate #1 - Bruno Stifanelli
As a group we all feel that  Bruno Stifanelli has great potential and could potentially be our number one candidate for our lead role who would en vile the Illuminati. Comparing Bruno to the the specification I can say that he has the rogue look about him and also that controversial look which makes him look important, which we need to ensure that the role is played well. I can confirm that Bruno is flexible and whiling.  After knowing Bruno for the last 10 years I know he would be right for the part.

Creating a Time Lapse

In today's media lesson with Mr Henton me, Jordan and Jack were given a Samsung Flashcam to aid us in preparation for out time lapse at the lighthouse theatre. I will be researching and looking for tutorials on how to use the camera to the best it can be. I am aiming to learn the time lapse feature. My fellow group member Jordan started small time lapse sequence during his free lesson.

This is a time lapse that Jordan and Jack created during our 40 minute lunch becuase we wanted to put the the cameras time lapse function into practise.

Location Planning At The Lighthouse theatre

This evening me and my fellow group member Jack walked to The Lighthouse Theatre to extend our planning and theories for our locations. Here me and jack did some additional planning and took both pictures and video. Here is what we got up too.

At The Lighthouse Theatre Me and jack had 6 specific shots in mind. Before meeting for the Lighthouse theatre Jack devised a list of shots which we were going to take picture of.

Starting backstage here is picture of The Lighthouse Theatre’s Backstage Dressing room.
In this backstage location we plan to show a character preparing himself with his suit and notes before he has to go on stage and unveiling the Illuminati secret. We plan to have various shots of the character getting ready to build up some tension before he goes on stage and reveals the big secret.

This is an image of a dressing room backstage of The Lighthouse theatre.
By having the "Authorised Access Only" I want to create a feeling with sense of importance to the audience.

This second picture is taken inside the room.

The Corridor is one of main filming areas as it plays a vital role in our film opening. We plan to get shots of our character leaving the backstage room all prepared up and ready and walking along towards the stage. However we will be using a tracking back shot while doing so and also be doing a voice over while you see our main character in the corridor. The voiceover consists of the opening to the main characters speech. To give you a taster of the tacking back shot we thought it was a good idea to record one while at the Lighthouse Theatre this can be viewed at the bottom of this post with other shots and clips take at the theatre.

This is the picture of the corridor linking the backstage room to the stage.

Next up we have a picture of the Audience Stage View. This is where we plan to record a different part yet still equally important to whole final product. Here we wish to record the build of a audience going into the theatre and waiting for main characters speech. To do this we will be using HD camera provided by Mr Henton which has a certain effect to film a time lapse which should give us the kind of audience build up we intended to have. By recording a live audience at The Lighthouse Theatre we can make our teen horror just that bit more authentic.

This is a picture of the audiences view of the stage.

.

Next up is an on stage view. This is the view that the person on stage will see when looking at the audience. This view is most effective when its over the shoulder because the camera will act as our main characters eyes and you'll see what the main character would

The next shot is the across stage shot. This is the roughly the same spot that we would be filming from.
This is a short video consisting of video clips and photos that me a jack took while we were at The Lighthouse Theatre.
After doing this I can now see all the pieces coming together and evidentially our final product is becoming even clearer. Slowly things are slotting into place because we now have our main location sorted. To continue with this good progress i think we should continue with our deadline list by doing our casting process however we will need to get together as a group and plan this.

Enquiry about The Lighthouse theatre

Our fellow group member Jack contacted The Kettering Lighthouse Theatre to see if we could use it as a potential filming location for our teen horror.

They have replied after this saying that we could use The Lighthouse Theatre in January after the ptomaine
season is over.

Props For Main Task (Illuminati Mask )

Our Fellow group member Joseph has purchased a illuminati mask which is to be worn during the filming of our teen horror. As a group we are doing well and everything is in order.

Below is 2 pictures of the mask:

Introduction to Livetype

Today in Mr Cradocks lesson in the media lesson we were introduced to a program that was made as an addition to Final Cut Express. Live type is a program where you create titles and once finished they can be easily  exported to Final Cut. Mr Cradock showed us a video which you obtained from YouTube. The video showed us how to write text, change the colour, size, spacing and add backgrounds. We were then given time to create our own titles and to get more acquainted with the software.

After playing with Live type and creating a title I personally didn't think that it was all that good also knowing that other members of the group could create better titles on different programs.

Location Planning

Today our group had another meeting during a free period to discuss ideas for our location and ultimately to plan several then pick the best one. During our meeting we brainstormed a few ideas of locations for our film opening. We have to take in to consideration that the main bulk of what we have planned needs to be shot at a theatre location. So after some discussion and brainstorming we suggested the lighthouse theatre as a good shooting location. However filming here wouldn't be that easy as we would require specific permission and authority so we are looking to pursue this matter future. I then suggested that on our upcoming awards evening we use the activity hall because there will be a stage and seats set like a theatre atmosphere with parents and students lined up and coming in.

Creation of the script

Finally we have produced the script for Breaking The 4th Wall! we are now one step closer to end. Our script produced by Jordan and Co writer Jack have done a very good job on creating the script because it looks like a genuine unprofessional script. All the guidelines set by Mr Henton on script were followed closely to ensure that it looks legit. We were told that soundtracks, effects and dialogue must be in capitals and that the font it's written in should be "Courier"

Friday 25 November 2011

Main Task Storyboard

Today me Jack and Joe produced the storyboard for our 2 minute horror film opening. Unlucky our group member Jordan couldn't participate due to an illness. So knowing we had a deadline the three of us took on the challenge. However we had Jack the co script writer to aid us in doing the storyboard.

We went to an empty classroom so that we could do the storyboard. To aid us i logged on to a computer and loaded our script which was then displayed on the board so that we could read it as we did the storyboard. By looking at the storyboard sheet we could see that we need to have most of the things from our script on there.
We included the audio, camera angles, sounds and then numerically ordered all the shots so that the storyboard is very easy to understand.

This is our first page with 6 shots.

This is our 2nd page with 6 more shots
This is our 3rd page with only 3 shots.

Now we have finished out storyboard we are ready to move to the next stage. I think that producing this helps us because our ideas become stronger and more detailed.

Additional group discussion

Today out group had thought it would be a good idea to get together in a free lesson to discuss more ideas for our horror opening. Having these extra group discussions has helped us because we are improving and developed our ideas even more.

In this meeting we further discussed 3 things. These were the location, soundtrack and casting.
During this discussions we decided to add different types of effects to our opening during the credits. we concluded to add a big camera flash and the camera flash noise during the titles. We then decided to add different types of shots cause tension to the audience add more horror effect.
All of our final audio, transition and effects will be written into our script.

Below is a picture of me our new addition to the group Jack discussion ideas and sharing thoughts.

Deadlines

Media Success and Blog Management - I have included these two factors because they strongly needed in order to maintain a level 4 blog. To keep a high standard blog and to be in the level 4 mark band all the posts should be analytical instead of descriptive. in other words this means that you need more detail and not just a description of what you did. Not only do you need well detailed posts but you also need to have good time management. This means that you're constantly updating your blog and keeping up to date. We were also told that we should be updating our blog every other day over 3 months which should total up to appropriately 45 posts.

We were also told to keep our blog neat and tidy and that they should authentically pleasing and something you can time and care with. we were told that we should be careful with the colour we chose and make sure that our blogs were readable. we were shown an example of a blog which was hard to read.

Pitch Feedback

To help us with our main task we gave our pitch to 3 people to get their views and comments to see what we can improve on and what we have done well already. I think that having others comment on our film idea will help us more.

Main Task Research

Today in a non contact lesson our group went to a free class room and created a brainstorm in order to initiate more ideas and tweak what we already had. During the brainstorm we were targeting 3 specific areas visual, audio and location. below are some picture of what we came up with.

This is an image of our group while we were brainstorming.

During the brainstorm we were looking into 3 key areas:

The first key area that we looked as was audio.

We believe that the audio will play a massive part in our horror because music can change everything. We need to have good audio but still keep in mind that we cant just get a good audio track. It's important that we don't do this because then we will have to fit our opening titles around the audio which will make everything a lot harder to do.

So we we brainstormed audio we couldn't go too deep into it. However we did disscuss that we wanted to use some specific Barrack Obama clip. The specific clip talks about "New world order" and this will help set the opening for what's coming on after.

Next we brainstormed the location. We want to ensure that we have the best possible location for our horror. we don't want to fit the script around the location because we cant do certain things in that location. From the pitch we planned to do from the pitch we know that we have to address the issue of a 'west end theatre' Then
our group member jack came up with the idea of using the local theatre in Kettering called The Lighthouse Theatre but because of all the authority we would need we had to find a more do able location and then we decided the the drama stage at school.

Lastly we brainstormed visual.

For the visual aspect we tried to mix it up with the effects during the opening titles. We first decided to have an old brick wall with the words “Breaking the 4th wall” coming out of it as the bricks cracked. So then i started to use fireworks to see how possible it was to do create this. After a long time of trial and error i decided that it would look to amateur so i decided not to purse this matter any future. Here is what i came up with.

Another idea that we came up with for visual was an illumanti shadows. We came up with the idea of cutting illumanti symbols out and then projecting them onto a wall with a red torch. I think this is good because it add more to the horror effect.

This is an image of the board that we brainstormed all our ideas.

Opening Film Pitch

In Today's lesson we presented our a pitch of the beginning of our horror film. Yesterday we planned this and took many things into consideration such as title, locations and audio. (We have added the picture of who's talking while they talk)
Below is a link to today's pitch:

Group changed

We have recently had a change to our group, JackWhite has now joined us and we are very pleased with this as he has good ideas and works hard. Our new addition has great potional and is always eager so i think he will fit in fine and help us to improve on our final product.

Se7en analysis

In today's lesson Mr Henton showed us the opening titles of a film called Se7en.We were asked to write down every title that comes up and the time it was displayed. We were aided in this by Mr Henton starting and stopping the video. We were then told to produce a analysis on the time line of Se7en and fill in the titles times, audio and visual. The audio was easy to do because i shut my eyes and played the opening and then wrote down what I heard. For the visual i turned off the audio and wrote what I saw.

Below is an analysis I did of the film opening Se7en.:

Planning the opening

Today our group started to discuss potential ideas for our film opening and how we would like it to happen. After many ideas and discuss we came to the conclusion of altering our previous idea by adding more to our original idea. the new idea is adding an additional extra element which we think will be much better. The new element we have added is to make out film opening a llluminati style. Our group agreed that we want show llluminati style in a west end stage on the opening night of highly rated production. As a group we have also decide that music plays a large part of a film opening and will massively impact. We don't plan to have any dialogue in our opening so our music needs to be good, so we want it to memorable yet an original piece of audio.

Saul Bass

Saul Bass (May 8, 1920 – April 25, 1996) He was a Jewish-American, graphic designer and filmmaker, best known for his design on animated motion picture title sequences
Saul Bass successfully direct and produced short animated films, commercials and television openings
He became famous for his work in film and classic logo design He is best known for his use of simple the symbolism of his shapes
During his 40-year career he worked for some of Hollywood's greatest filmmakers, including most notably Alfred Hitchcock, Otto Preminger, Stanley Kubrick and Martin Scorsese.
Bass designed the sixth AT&T Bell System logo, as well as AT&T's "globe" logo after the breakup of the Bell System.
He also designed Continental Airlines' 1968 "jet stream" logo which became one of the most recognized airline industry logos.

Amongst his most famous title sequences are the animated paper cut-out of a heroin addict's arm for Preminger's The Man with the Golden Arm, the text racing up and down that eventually becomes a high-angle shot of the United Nations building in Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest, and the disjointed text that races together and apart in Psycho (1960).

ID Card

In our other media lessons we have been improving our photographic skills with Mr Craddock. This was then leading up to taking a good photo which will then be used for a media ID card. The purpose of the ID card is for when we want book out media equipment from the LRC. In the process of making the media card i used a program called pages. Pages was good to use because it was easy to crop my picture, add and resize text. Overall I think this task was easy to do.

Monday 7 November 2011

Opening Titles

In preparation for our main task today's lesson we began to look at the opening titles of films and how they can have a big effect as they create a mood at the start of a film. In the lesson Mr Henton showed us some videos clips of opening scenes from a website recommended by the exam board.("Art of the title") These scenes were the opening titles of these four films:

Aliens: I like the way that "ALIEN" is written across the top slowly as the film starts. I think this a was a good way to write it as when it starts the audience are trying to workout what it says which then adds some mystery to this alien film.

Dawn Of The Dead: The good thing about the opening titles of Dawn Of The Dead is the red text on a black background and blood dripping.

John Carpenter's: The Ward: The Ward uses a good soundtrack which adds to the horror whilst images are on in the background. The credits appeared in a ghostly form and the images. The images used is another good thing about the opening title.

Zombieland: The opening titles for zombie land are red representing blood they are slow moving as are the images behind.

All of these films use different techniques in their opening titles, all these techniques have different effects such as the font, colours, sound, positioning and order of cast will all have an effect.

Jeepers Creepers 2 Film opening

Our main task is to create the start of a teen horror so we set the task to watch the start of a selected horror film and answer some questions on the film.

Our group’s film was Jeepers Creeper 2. The film producer is myriad and the distributors are American Zoetrope Pictures. The film was released in 2003 with the certificate of age 15 and Victor Salva directed the film.

The film opening is eight minutes long and starts with a low crabbing. From the first part of the film as it opens we see a very large corn field and can tell this film is set on a farm. We don’t see anything else around the farm which shows us its excluded from everyone. (This is a common horror film convention) The opening scene consists of 86 shots. There are some special effects used such as the scarecrow grabbing the boy and flying away. The opening starts slow but builds up tension as it goes along and then music start which slow speeds up as the young boy is kidnapped.

Pitch

Today at 12:05 our group pitched our idea for our main task the teen horror to our teacher.

Wednesday 19 October 2011

Preliminary Task

Today our group imported out preliminary task footage on to the Macs and then edited it using Final Cut. Before doing these we had to make sure that our preliminary task had all the camera angles that were requires and that the audio was clear. After achieving this we cropping clips and then started adding effects and music to our footage. Editing our footage was fairly easy as final cut is user friendly software. After creating out final product someone had deleted it off the Mac so we had to create our preliminary task again. This wasn't too much trouble as we had recently made it so we could remember everything.

Tuesday 18 October 2011

Transferring footage

Today we taught how to get our preliminary task footage from the cameras to the macs and then convert it to QuickTime so that we can edit the footage using a program called Final Cut.

Media Lesson

Today in our lesson we were all assigned a common role of film making such director or boom operator. We had to find out from each other all of the roles and what they did.

Some of the new roles we learnt were:

The production Manger - draws up the budget
The boom operator - Operates the long "boom" stick with the microphone on the end (grey spongy bit)

The make-up artists - changing the actors into character in the way they look

Preliminary Task

Today our group booked out the camera and tripod and went to our desired location where chose to film. It took us less than 1 hour to film everything because we had planned it so well. I think our preliminary task went well. The next stage for our group is to use Final cut and edit the footage.

Survey Results

Here are the results of our survey

This shows that 15-17 year olds did my survey the most and then followed by 12-15 which is good because my final product will be a teen horror aimed at teens.
This show me that mainly scared of the suspense during a horror film.
These results tell me that out of all the people that did my survey most prefer the Comedy Horror Genre and this then followed by Thriller Horror.

Wednesday 5 October 2011

Common Conventions found in horror films

I was set the task to write a post about some of most common horror film conventions that are feature in most of the top films.
I will start this post with my first convention which is in all horror films and that is the location. I think that setting/location of a horror film is very important as the film is based around this area. For example an old wooden cabin in the middle of the woods excluded from society with no electricity or connection to outside world. I would say this convention is one of the first ever done but it’s still used today and is still very effective. The audience then know that when watching the film there is no help for miles so the people in the film can’t be rescued.

Here is the next convention I will write about it. After someone has recently been murdered their friend aren’t too shocked and quickly forget as if they were never friends and then they forget the danger and die in the same way. The audience know that they will then die because their friend died in the same way so tension is made waiting for it to happen.
Another very common convention that always happens is someone hears a strange noise and the goes to investigate what has happened but them always end up going alone. They normally don’t return and then someone goes looking for them stupidly and also dies.

Here is the next convention I will write about it. After someone has recently been murdered their friend aren’t too shocked and quickly forget as if they were never friends and then they forget the danger and die in the same way. The audience know that they will then die because their friend died in the same way so tension is made waiting for it to happen.

The next convention that I will write about is with phones. Back when horror films started the electricity went or someone would cut the phone lines when you were in danger and needed help so there was no outside contact. However in today’s society we have mobile phones so to get around this most commonly in horror films the person usually has no signal or runs out of battery. This also links in with lights because every time someone is in danger the lights cut and the power is gone. This then makes the audience anxious and then they want to see what happens next.

Another very common convention is the character falling over. Always at the most important moment just as the character is about to get away they fall over and then die.

Another convention is double scares after everything the character has been through the audience expect a scare and it’s a pet or a lost friend which then relaxes the audience because it didn’t happen then straight after the real scare happens which scares the audience more because they weren’t expecting this.

London Media Trip

Today we visited London film museum. My media class were taken on a tour around the museum and shown the history of how film product first started and how they worked and then on a timeline to a more recent film. I though the tour was interesting because we got to see original clothing and props from films such as Harry Potter. After the Museum we were given a break before we started the second part of our trip which was a 2 hour workshop. In the workshop we had to come up with an idea of a short film including the title, cast and props. After this we filmed our short films in the London film museum. After filming our workshop host showed us some editing features which we could use for our main task later in this year.

questionnaire

Today we created a survey on survey monkey to help us collect information for our main task. We created a questionnaire to gather information from people and get to know what they think about horror films. The questionnaire was deigned to help us chose a target audience and what type of horror we would create. To create the questionnaire I used a free website called "survey monkey. I Think survey monkey is a good resource because it's set out well and also allow to electronically distribute your questionnaire and then graphs yours results.

Film Openings - The Wrong Turn

Today watched the film opening of “Wrong turn” and analysed it. I think doing this will help us with our main task of creating a film opening of a teen horror. While analysing this film opening we realised that it contained of the common horror film convention such as the fake scare. This happens when the women almost falls down the cliff, this was shortly followed by a real scare where the male character has been killed and she then begins to be pulled up by an unknown threat in an aggressive manor. The music at this point then became faster as the “baddies” presence became acknowledged by the viewer. The opening ended with the unimportant characters being killed, this happens in most horror movies as a prologue.
Wrong turn is rated 6.0 on the imbd website.

Wrong Turn is a 2003 American slasher film, directed by Rob Schmidt, and written by Alan B. McElroy. The film was shot in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and stars Desmond Harrington and Eliza Dushku. It is the first film in the Wrong Turn franchise which has since grown to include three direct-to-DVD/Blu-ray sequels.

Tuesday 27 September 2011

Today we were told to create 2 power point presentations. The first one is about the Horror film history and my second is a "An american wolf in London" We were also shown how to use a tripod and checkout the cameras/tripods.

Introduction to Final Cut

In today’s lesson our group was introduced to the software called Final Cut. This software is one of the best editing software in the media industry. Out teacher Mr Henton gave us quick tutorial on how to use Final Cut and some of features on it. After familiarising ourselves with Final Cut we edited an old video clip for practice, this was to give us some experience of editing before we do our preliminary task.

Final cut express is video editing software created by Apple. This software is designed for advanced editing and can be used by armatures and professionals. Final Cut is a more a more advanced software than iMovie.

Some of Final cut express’s features are:

· The ability to keyframe filters

· Dynamic RT, which changes real-time settings on-the-fly

· Motion path keyframing

· Opacity keyframing

· Ripple, roll, slip, slide and blade edits

· Picture-in-picture and split-screen effects

· Up to 99 video tracks and 12 compositing modes

· Up to 99 audio tracks

preliminary task

Today we started to create our storyboard for the preliminary task. We then took pictures of 2 locations that could potentially be used as filming locations for our preliminary task. Then we made our cast list and photo graphed them. our cast is me and Joe.

We were also given our target grades mine is a C.

Preliminary Script

In today's lesson our group (Joe Jordan me( started to put our rough ideas together to make a final piece. After some discussion and planning we made a rough copy for our preliminary script.
